Match calipers to shifters (especially Shimano). Shimano keeps changing the cable pull ratios, so your best bet is to try to select the calipers that match your levers.
They only changed once when they went to the latest 10 and 11-speed groups. Older 10-speed (5600, 6600, etc. ) and everything prior uses the older short pull levers.
