You haven't mentioned what grease you'll be using when you reassemble. The LBS can help with that, or buy a small tub of wheel bearing grease at the auto parts store. It works fine for any assembly that uses ball bearings.

You deserve credit on two counts: 1) for taking on this project as a first timer and 2) for resurrecting an older bike as a learning exercise. The mechanical experience gained has application in many other things - household and car repairs, to name just a few. Please keep us posted.
