A $50 new chain every few months could save you hundreds by preserving your drivetrain.

I change my chain when it gets to .5

A 9 speed Shimano XT drive train is a long lasting good choice for a touring bike. Why? because they last a long time even in harsh environments. Add friction shifters, and you can switch between 8, 9, 10 speed cassettes.

Nothing wrong with a bicycle repair class. Well worth the price of admission.

What ever you do, get a new chain and new cassette at the same time as your new crank.
