My experience of European kitchens which was, admittedly, limited to two in Germany many years ago, is that there is not available storage for lots of processed and packaged foods or even produce because you go to the store every day or every few days to buy what you need fresh. There were also no giant refrigerators because only the people shopping in the PX or commissary were buying gallons of ice cream or milk or boxes of cereal the size of an infant.
