For short rides/commutes: not much penalty for riding them into the ground- i.e. cords are showing, or until flats become more frequent.

Longer/harder/more remote rides: maybe replace sooner- square profile on the back can reduce cornering grip.

No need to replace tubes if they're working.

Buy on sale & have a set of tires on hand for when needed.
