It's not even true.

Scientists put a bunch of apes in a room with a ladder and bananas hanging from the ceiling.

Ape climbs the ladder to get the bananas, and all the apes get the hose.

This happens for a bit...apes don't go for the bananas.

After a while new apes get rolled in one by one, and after enough hosing whenever a noob goes for the bananas the rest tackle him.

After a while all the apes who'd experienced the hosing are rotated out yet the population continues to prohibit anyone from getting the bananas without even understanding why.
