When I built up my first commuter, maybe 6 years ago now, I read the internets and they all told me I needed Armadillo tires, so that's what I rode for like a year. I then bought another bike that happened to have some Michelin Pro slicks on it and realized I'd been doing it wrong the whole time. I eventually got some GP4000s tires for the Bianchi and rode that a couple of hundred miles a week with no flats for a whole summer.
