Shimano also made 600 series shifter that fit on one of these aero bosses.
From what I've seen the Shimano boss is more of a rectangular shape with beveled edges and Suntour's was a simple threaded cylinder (with hole extending into the downtube). The Suntour (non-symmetric) mount is nice because you can easily mod it with a file to accept standard square boss shifters.
