I retired early and it was a great decision. I'd say two things are required to make this work.

1) You must be able to afford it (or have some option to fill in the financial gap)

2) You have to be a person who can find their own interests to fill their time

#1 was a stretch for me, but doable. #2 was a trivial in my case so retiring was right for me.
