I never removed the mudguards when cartoning up my bike to fly overseas, just slipped the back strut bolts till it contacted the tire.

though if you have to get it all packed in as small a box the brand new bike shipped in that may not be practical ..

Amtrak and KLM have bigger boxes than the new bikes cross the Pacific in, on a Container ship.

How many times have you packed your bike to fly across an Ocean?
