Elcruxio makes an excellent point that mirrors my experience as well. Almost anyone can take the occasional cold/wet spell in stride but prolonged exposure to cold stress without relief is a sure way to end a tour. So an equipment list may be heavier, to allow for changes of clothes or more secure shelters, but that may also ensure a more pleasurable and successful trip.

I've had to call trips because of failure or misery in the past and would prefer to ensure a reasonable chance of success by packing a little heavier that to risk it by going too light.
Along those lines, on our most recent long tour, Rowan and I opted to carry down jackets. They were light and did pack down well, but of course did add a little bit to the weight. However, they were well worth it ... absolutely no regrets.
