For me, that's what it mostly came down to. No way in hell the front runners were going to do anything underhanded to risk a disqualification, but the internet jockeys were always ready to pounce on people they suspected might not be following the rules and it always created drama. One group of people came from Italy, if I recall correctly, and people were griping daily about how it was supposed to be an "individual" event, but they were riding *gasp* together. Those people were just there to have fun! People on the forums made a bigger deal of it than was necessary.
To me, it's kind of like a triathlon event now. There will be serious contenders and then there will be people there only racing themselves, and that's totally fine. As long as they're not sh***ng on the trial, right?
The most entertaining one was a few years ago when the record holder, who was a regular poster on that forum, kept making lots of sideways remarks about the two front runners because they were riding so closely together for the last half of the course. Made the guy seem really petty and jealous because they were threatening his record.
