pieces for viola are more of a "rhythm guitar" bent, and violin can be lead or rhythym, but is generally more difficult

That helps. I never knew those different characters of the instruments. I was looking on line trying to figure out what are good brands and what are junk. I may look into renting one for a while to see if she is going to stick with it. If she does, then maybe buy her one. It looks like decent beginner instruments are in the $200 to $400 range including the instrument, bow, case and some rosin.
