That's the other part of it. A middle-high grade bike for $2k today gets you a waaayyyy better bike in absolute terms compared to the $450 middle-high grade bike in 1977, while body and legs, for the most part, are very similar than as now. Technology value has far outpaced inflation. People entering the sport in 2015 are having a very different experience than people who entered the sport in 1977.
