You do the quality management industry a grave disservice by dismissing their concepts as "buzzwords". Considering that statistical quality management was one of the most significant developments in manufacturing during the whole 20th century, giving it a backhand slap like that is really unwarranted. Mass production was a big deal in the early 1900's, but without statistical quality management it was seriously handicapped.
Hey, nothing wrong with the methods, but the buzzwords are really out of control. This ain't religion. Whatever you call it, it comes down to a lot of process tracking and inspection and that sht's expensive. The bit about it being a cost savings relies on assumptions about the costs of quality control vs. the cost of things going wrong. It is not automatically a cost savings, particularly in an environment where there is little cost to a bad frame going out the door that a little bondo, sandpaper and a good paint job can't fix.
