I'm finding that people rarely have any idea what their bikes weigh, but they feel that since they bought carbon, it should be lighter than everything else when often times it is not. For sure, the weight thing is kind of nutty. When you look at the individual bike, 3 pounds is huge, but then add 180 pounds (Or maybe even 220, because some people like food) and suddenly 3 pounds is not as significant. I think you're right in the sense that comfort and feel should drive bike choice, regardless of material because just about any material can be done right and you're within 3 or 4 pounds of a stupid light build. But comfort and feel can vary for people. For some reason, The Domane is really, really nice for me. For you, it ended up being steel. As long as your own bike puts a smile on your face, it's all good.
EDIT: I should add I had an early carbon Roubaix with 105 and it weighed over 20 pounds.
