The interview with David Anthony when he got caught was illuminating. He wasn't doping to win anything in particular. He started doping because he felt insecure, like he was a fraud, like he didn't belong in the fields he was racing in because he was outclassed.

I think the decision to start doping probably has little to do with the specific competition, in most amateur cases. It's more a manifestation of a particular personality type.
