Thanks for the responses. I am still looking for the answer regarding the actual set-up to make use of the trick.
My main reason for asking is that I have a tandem with a suntour freehub (PowerFlow). If I break a spoke on the drive side, I would like to be able to remove the cassette to thread a new spoke. If a spoke breaks on the drive side when I do not have two chain whips (heavy to carry two of them), I would still like to perform the removal. Using the rotafix trick, I have done the removal with one chain whip by immobilizing the freehub.
I know that the suntour cassette hub is old technology and should be replaced. However, this is cost prohibitive. So in the meantime, I look for a solution for what I have.
I read the Sheldon trick and searched the forums for more information (and found two threads where someone had success using the trick described). In addition, both threads specifically mentioned Uniglide and not Suntour cassettes or freewheels. I surmised that the trick would work with all of these different technologies and did not consider if it were practical in all of the situations (but it would still be helpful to know if it did work in all the described situations). I have a necessity in the case of the suntour cassette and thought it would be worthwhile to document and capture this information on the forum if the trick does indeed work for all of the technologies.
