That's how smartcards (gift cars, transit cards, etc.) work too ... so the thinking is, why not just cut out the middleman (the smartcards) and just use our bank cards now.
Actually, you're behind the times also. Now you don't even need the bank card. Just put your phone near the card reader. The newest ones don't even require the merchant (bus company, in this case) to install any new equipment or programs.
Personally, I prefer cash. But I guess I'm old, set in my ways, and soon to be placed on an ice floe.
