Our system is switching completely away from cash but it doesn't affect poor customers. They get a smart card that can be loaded up with cash. Revenue for the transit authority is expected to go down as riders get discounts for loading multiple rides on the card.

Our system has just removed the $5 fee for Greencards. Used to be that you paid $5 for the Greencard, but it would pay for itself in the savings (20% off cash fares) ... but in October they got rid of the $5 and are making a huge push to encourage everyone to get a Greencard. And faster boarding is one of the reasons.
