True. That's why I always suggest choosing about 3-4 LBSs to test ride bikes. Because not only are you testing the bike, but you're testing the LBS, also.
I have a Fuji Sportif that I got from my local Peformance Bikes. It has a disc brake, so it has 28/32 spokes. Which helps for Clydes. So do include your local Performance store (and the Fuji's that it has) in your selection process. I'm right at your weight.
And you can get a
Fuji Sportif with 105 components for $1100. So this would give you plenty of money left over for accessories and if you think you need it, new wheels built for you and your weight.
While some here do like Steel bikes, but at 245#, any material frame will easily hold your weight. The weak point is going to be the wheels and the tires.
For comfort reasons, you'll want a bike with a CF fork. You'll also want the bike to support 700x28's. That way you don't have to have them pumped up exceptionally high. And the higher the pressure, the more you're going to feel every bump that you go over.
