I have done this for many years, but no longer. Paraffin is the best chain lubricant and automatically cleans the chain too, but it fouls the derailleurs badly.
Now that I'm looking at alternate methods, I see that you are right! The wax itself is cheap as dirt, and there are a zillion methods of holding the wax. I'm just a sucker for nice packaging, I guess!
