I've had chain lube that smelled like coconuts.
My latest lube I bought was Tri-Flow that has a distinctive banana smell.
It goes on very thin. Presumably some of the banana smell is it drying out a bit..

According to the MSDS, their standard Tri-Flow is a petroleum based product.

However, they also sell a soy based Tri-Flow lube (with less info on the MSDS).

I wonder if you'd get good chain lube just using vegitable oil. It does tend to freeze, but that may not be a problem if it is applied at warmer temperatures so that the lube penetrates into the chain before freezing.

The Triflow Soy above is rated at (12 to 475° F). But, still, it may be ok if it is applied in warmer temperatures.
