Go to page one of this thread and you will find how to figure out the serial code. "W" means American market, and "F" corresponds to 6, referring to 1986. From there the numbers mean production numbers. Anyway, page 1 spells it out.
Also vintage-trek.com has a page on component date codes by brand. If you look on the back of the derailleurs, for example, there are 2 letters. Those are date codes, so if the components are original to the bike, it will help nail down the timeline.
