Strava issue

So I just finished a 70 mile ride on a great winter day. Full sun and about 40 degrees. Lots of gain, appropriate clothing and nutrition so I made good time. I checked strava once (18 miles in) to check my route and went on my way. I finished the ride on strava and saved it, and, arg! There's a straight line from the point where I'd checked the route to where I finished the ride. Bummed out. So. Has anyone else done this? I've been using the app for a couple of months and am leary about fiddling with it mid-route for fear that this might happen. I do check it occasionally to see that its recording, and it typically reads "auto-paused." I particularly worry when there's an interruption like a phone call. Thats why I checked it a second time today (a phone call) and saw that I had apparently stopped it some 40 miles previous, but I'm not quite sure how I stopped it or why it didn't start recording again as it typically does when it reads auto-paused. How exactly do I restart the app if I accidentally stop it during a ride? I have done that before, "stopped" it as opposed to it being "auto-paused" and it makes me nervous, and thinking that the only next step is to terminate the ride and save it. Hope I'm making this clear.

Any suggestions, experience or advice appreciated!
