Is it possible that I have the axle shifted too far to the left, and if so, how do I correct this?

Thanks!
I have this hub and have overhauled it (was my very 1st experience overhauling any sort of Sturmey Archer hub). On the right side, you should be able to look through the "window" hole and see the end of the axle - just like with the other vintage SA hubs, you look through there to see how your indicator pin is aligned when setting up the shifting. If you can't see the end of the axle, I suspect either the axle is too long or there's an extra spacer on the right side.

Please post photo if possible.

Note - unlike a regular hub-axle setup you can't just shift things to the left because of the position of the planetary gear which is that integrated "gear" in the center of the axle. Also, have you overhauled one of these before and what instructions did you use (just curious).

I'll go out and check my hub shortly and see if I can get some photos up.

Heres a diagram if you don't have:
