I find my thicker Conti tires (Gatorskins and Comfort Contacts) to hold air quite well for a long period than my Grand Prix classics and the tubes are the same between the bike with the Grand Prix Classics and both of my Gatorskinned bikes (though one of them is slightly wider). I am sure there are a ton of factors involved but that is my anecdotal evidence that a tire can help.
