I assume you're not talking about the little 12 volt compressors some people keep in their cars. Although they can be handy too, they don't hold a candle even to a little pancake compressor. Once you have one you find a million different uses for them. Blowing stuff off, filling things up, scaring your dog, setting up an optically controlled pneumatic power opener on the fridge door...ok, I didn't do the last one, but I'm trying to figure out what I can do with some of the pneumatic cylinders I'm using at work when we finish with them.
