Hijack: I think a far more important point raised in the interview was about speed. I for one, am all about speed. (I'm not very fast, but that's not the point.) For me, riding is not about pleasure. The pleasure is in pushing myself to go farther and faster. There's nothing I like more than going faster than cars on downhills. If it takes a skinny-tired bike to do it, so be it. If it was all about going places in comfort, I'd get into a car. I'm sure there's a great deal of people like me, and they're the people in the market for road bikes. Everyone else buys a POS mountain bike or hybrid and rides them three times.
