With out waxing philosophical over the wording or nature of my question, could someone please state what hubs they have used with good longevity & ease of service for trail & touring ?

Key info includes is the hub for disc brakes? (probably) what's the OLD (i.e. is is 135mm QR, or 142 maxle), what sort of budget are you looking at? from the little info supplied, a Shimano M8000 suggested above would be a good option if not using a SRAM XD cassette.
However with all the pre-build factory wheel available today, unless you really really want to built it, it's normally cheaper to buy a factory wheel, as most of these are just fit and forget today.
