I got a Garmin 520 for Christmas and had been playing with Live Strava Segments. I had defined a lightly rolling 3.2 mile segment that I often ride but is typically avoided by local cyclists. It ends on a 4 lane, divided highway (speed limit 55) and while that sounds uninviting, it has a 3+ foot wide shoulder (road is only a year old) that is absolutely the smoothest/fastest piece of pavement that I ride on. The cars don't have to budge to get around you (and it isn't that busy anyway) plus it is less than 2 miles to unlimited "true country cycling" to the east of West End, NC. So I am on it a bunch.
I had a steady 5 or better mph tailwind and maybe 1/4 mile into the ride I was 2 seconds ahead of my
PR without working that hard. So I thought "what the heck" and put my (66 year old, not all that lethal) hammer down and ended up with a KOM on that segment. Note that there have been only 19 riders total on this segment - like I said in the Subject: line :-)
So if anybody wants a cheap/easy KOM, just head over to "Foxfire To 211"

I also got a Garmin 520 for Christmas .
And I'm jealous you have roads like that. my roads around me are beat up and dirty accompanied by shoulders with rumble gards and 60mph speed limits some 65. And threw town is 50 with a real small shoulder . but grats on the kom
