To believe this would require having a self-centered view. Most people don't care about me. If they get irritated, they usually forget quickly.
We found a good car mechanic near where I work, so it's now my job to bring my wife's car in for repair. That meant I had to drive to work yesterday. I find driving a car to be more irritating and scary than riding a bike or taking mass transit. To paraphrase a popular bumper sticker, a bad bike ride is better than a good car ride.
The fact that you find driving an irritation proves my point. To most drivers we're one more source of irritation, assuming they see us in the first place. I'm grateful if they extend me some common courtesy on the road, but I don't expect it.
