As far as locks are concerned, the most important thing to remember is that even the best, most expensive lock is just a deterrent. What type of deterrent you need depends on where you live and where you plan on leaving the bike. Are you going to leave it in the same spot every day for work, are you going to leave it outside your home or apartment, etc.
Yeah, I've heard using phone is just much easier. I don't know if I would like to keep my phone mounted on the bike though.

Regarding locks, I was wondering if 11mm or 18mm steel locks differ in any way? I mean, it's not like a thieft's gonna see an 18mm lock and think 'oh, that's 7mm too thick, I won't touch it'. And they always seems to weight a lot more. I'm mostly going to be locking it in a city centre where it's usually pretty busy during day time. So I guess I don't need the thickest one.
