There were versions of these shifters that were backwards from the OP's, i.e. the lever's pivot axis behind the stem quill. And they were perhaps the more common variety!

But these ones are what I'd call the better ones, and cannot be used with the branded clamp plate facing forward (the levers would swing in the wrong direction).
