What happened was that someone I was having trouble with (ok, had a fight with) at my part time job vandalized this guy's car. He had given some friends and I a ride, and the miscreant waited until we were gone and smashed his windows. I didn't find out about it until weeks later. At that time I could barely afford to keep my own beater car on the road.

Eventually the vandal confessed and paid compensation, but that doesn't make up for the fact that I never offered to help.
