Eventually the vandal confessed and paid compensation, but that doesn't make up for the fact that I never offered to help.

I have a couple questions:

What is it you think you should have done to help?

How do you know, if you know, that your friend has hard feelings?

If you don't know that he has hard feelings, why don't you just ask him if he remembers the incident and feels you should have done something other than what you did?
