I have always found that I wore out rims long before my cup and cone hubs ever developed problems. I guess that with disc brakes that would be different, but I always figure a set of cup and cone hubs will generally out last two sets of rims. That seems to be true for any of the hubs that I have used ranging from fairly low end hubs to dura ace.
