Addiction is a specific psychiatric term and is split into two categories of dependency -- substance-based and psychological. Many addictions combine the two. This has been recognized in the past two editions of the DSM.
Substance based addiction happens when the chemical interaction of an outside substance provokes internal neuro-chemical responses which have been linked to addiction. Much later in addiction treatment, it has been found that behavior divorced from any substance can also cause the same kind of addiction-indicator responses. Gambling is an officially noted, non-substance based, psychological addiction. Overeating is widely recognized as an addiction. And recently, online gaming has come under scrutiny as a possible addiction.
Habit is a completely different thing, and a description of addiction as simply a "destructive habit" is not correct. It might be a helpful generalization when trying to explain addiction to those who have a hard time comprehending it, but it is technically deficient.
My guess is that driving an automobile is a cultural norm in North America, a habit for many, but a true addiction for only a very small minority.
