That sounds like a good idea as electrical tap is a bit messy. Where do you get that silicone tape and is there a brand name to ask for?
Edit: I did a search and Home Depot and Lowes both sell it. Locktite is one brand and Nashua is another. Any preference?
I just buy generic tape from EBay, it all seems to be about the same; no reason the stuff you found should not be fine also. Make sure that you stretch it nice and tight, it seems to stick better that way. And use clean hands or gloves, hand oil keeps it from adhering as well. Once it is fused it is pretty much a solid piece; just nick it with a razor blade to remove it cleanly.
