in the 50's I built up a 3 by 3 by 3 speed more cogs on the 3 speed & a triple crank .. but i dont thrash my bikes.

Rohloff made their 14 speedhub to replace the entire MTB drivetrain. for a similar range .
They're used in MTB Enduro Races .

Your AW 3 hubs are 3/4 of the middle gear and 4/3 of it for the high.. you determine what the size of the 2nd speed is

by your chain ring size and the hub cog (13~22t)
