Sneaking a bicycle into and out of Venice?

Our summer bike trip begins and ends in Venice, but is really a Croatian trip. A couple of nights in Venice to walk the streets seemed was going to be about right before we boarded the train to get us to Trieste to start cycling south. Then, I read on Trip Advisor "no bicycles in the Venice Historic Centre". Our accommodation would be only .7 km from the train station. Could we sneak them to and from the station? Has anyone tried to walk their loaded rigs through Venice? I don't mind taking the occasional chance, but getting busted the first day out just might put a damper on the trip. Any insight would be appreciated.
