Many officials at the train stations are the most unhelpful people, especially if you're struggling with the language. Plus, it is best to make plans early, before one gets hotel reservations fixed in stone.
Yeah, good point. Plus they speak the venetian dialect in Venice, so phrasebooks won't be terribly helpful. I agree best bet is to simply ask the hotel people before you get there.

They had boat taxis when I was there, but that was 25+ years ago. Hard to imagine they don't still have water taxis available from the train station.

I remember one foot bridge being fairly steep, but frankly my memory of it is pretty fuzzy at this point. Even so, like you say, not insurmountable.
