I just bought a GT Grade, an "adventure road bike" with disc brakes. People have corrected me when I called it a cross bike, it has hardware to mount a fender and bottle cages, more relaxed geometry.
Living in Seattle, it rains a lot. Disc brakes have more consistent stopping power in the wet. And they don't chew up your rims.
I don't think GT offers a frameset, but their base Grade, the alloy one, is about $700, too.
