Singlespeed freewheel lock ring: regular or reverse threaded?

I assume that the lock ring on the freewheel of my new singlespeed hub is reverse threaded, but before I attempt removal, I want to double check. Do I turn it clockwise to remove it (assuming reverse threaded)? Follow-up shame-faced question. I am in too much of a rush to order the proper removal tool and the bike shop is closed. Can I carefully insert a flat punch into one of the notches of the lock ring and strike the punch with a hammer to unthread it? I assume that from the factory it was not put on with massive torque, and being brand new, it is not corroded on.
