I seriously love coffee in all it's forms except French press. However reading mummyking's description as to how to make it rings very true to me. It's dirty-water bitter to me vs espresso's rich bitterness. The answer is to clearly get the coffee away from the grounds.

Might be worth trying on the boat, just to simplify things.
I travel with an Aeropress. Similar to a French Press but easier and cleaner and gives a drink closer to espresso. I've probably made 20 cups this week while on vacation. You still have to get the grind right so I have my roaster guy grind me a bag before I leave on my trip. The grind is slightly coarser than an espresso grind which also works well in my Bialetti Mocha pot, too.
