Do you see any dirt or foreign material on any of the mating surfaces? If so, clean them thoroughly. Don't worry about missing paint, but if metal parts have become worn or deformed, that's likely the cause of your problem. With any mechanical problem, try to restore parts to their original condition as much as possible. Sometimes you can carefully remove burrs or other deformities with a small file.
