I do old fashioned rolled oats. I boil water with either apples and cinnamon, raisins and cinnamon and cloves, or strawberries. I have cut out the dark brown sugar I used to add and no one noticed. At a full boil I put in the oats and lower to a simmer and cook. When they just start getting dry I turn off the heat and stir in milk (it cools and cleans the pan). While it cooks I usually have time to prep lunches and coffee or put away the dishes.
I find it crazy that my five year old son loves oatmeal, with a passion. I always think of them as a thing kids don't care for. He can eat half a cup of uncooked oats all cooked up for breakfast! My wife on the other hand grew up eating them and doesn't like them, I don't care for her parents oats either. I usually poach her an egg. I alternate oats and scrambled eggs every other morning and pancakes on Saturday or Sunday.
I grew up occasionally eating instant oats and now I used instant oats for those hungry mornings at work, other than that I have cut instant oats from my diet. I always remember scout camp slop they called oatmeal, it put me off oats until I made them myself. I actually had a friend ask me how I did it since my method keeps the oats more intact and not mushy.
I very much dislike any type of nut on my food, except pecan pie.
