You're making an interesting distinction. I was just saying that work = force x distance. So are you saying that if I wind a mechanical toy and increase its potential for moving when I release the toy on the floor, that's work? If so, I'd argue that we had to move (wind) the spring, and that constituted the work. The movement of the toy on the floor (release of stored energy) is just the result of our work.
