Not sure how you define a free and open economy. World wide patent application, human rights abuses, suppression of political freedom, GATS, collution with the rest of the "developed" world in to unfair treatment and international trade laws to developing counties......
Free trade is usually tied to a power struggle of vested interests that mulitnational companies tend to rule over the basic human rights of developing counties. UK included in this. Re Multi lateral agreements and general agreement on services, internation laws, banking and investment in companies that seriously abuse developing counties citizens.

Free and open in whos eyes............
In the world wealthiest counties we are al involved in human abuses indirectly by the companies we work for and the banks that they and we use. We can ethically look for the least damaging ones. The notion that any developed country has a free and open trade with the rest of the world is a utopia that ignores the suffering of the world poor inflicted by multinational companies.
Roll on fair trade not free trade.
