PaulRivers, we got a big snowfall, but ever since then, it's been warm. The snow is melting fast. AND the city has been doing a fantastic plowing and salting, at least in
Manhattan (home) and
The Bronx (work). I heard they did a bad job in
Queens. They've been doing it every day, and they're still doing it today. Not much is left. I rode into work today for the first time since the snowfall. I waited because it's a long ride, and I didn't want gunk on the surfaces to slow me down. I've taken short rides in the meantime.
The ski helmet and new jacket have paid for themselves. Even though it's not very cold today, I wore it. It's a bit warm and it's quite noisy, but I feel so comfy and safe in it. I'm also wearing giant loose moccasins rather than cycling shoes, and they've proven to be good in cold weather. I've come to realize the ice tires may never be justified. They don't help much in snow, and I'm not likely to be riding over much ice if any at all. Days that are likely to be icy are days I should stay off the bike, not because I'd feel unsafe but because I don't think I can afford the extra time it will take to ride in. OK, lesson learned, but so far, the winter has been much more fun than previous ones.
And hey, maybe will will get frozen stuff that sticks for a week or two. February has just started, so it's still possible. But once February is over, the probability is nearly nil for this area.
