You don't have to sew it in, just slide it into place where you need it and it'll stay put well enough on it's own, or you can reposition it from time to time as you arrange your parts.
My first thought was that it would it just create another irritating seam, but your right, it's worth a try. A lot cheaper than buying shorts or bibs only to find out they are not solving the issue.
